Team Read is the name for the Summer Reading ChallengeTM in Libraries in 2008.
The aim of the Summer Reading Challenge is to get children to read six books from their local library over the summer holiday. Children are given a membership card and keep track of the books they read on a special fold-out poster, collecting some fun stickers along the way.
There are three stages to the challenge to this year: read two books and readers get a bronze medal sticker, read two more and you can claim a silver medal sticker, and read two more (i.e. six in total) and you can get your gold!
This summer, as sport is celebrated in so many forms at home and abroad, we wanted to make the link with reading. Like athletes in training, new readers need a little gentle encouragement to grow in confidence. With our medal system, Team Read breaks the Summer Reading Challenge up into achievable goals for young readers.
With Team Read, all kids can join in at their local library, and their coaches (the librarians) will help children maximise their reading potential. Research shows that children who take part in the Summer Reading Challenge return to school energised and eager to learn, often with a renewed enthusiasm for reading and all the advantages it offers.
To sign up to Team Read, just go to your local library.
Library staff will give you a Team Read membership card and/or a fold-out poster to take home, and they can tell you all about how the Challenge runs in your area.
They can be any books you like - stories, fact books, picture books, joke books - it's up to you. As long as they are borrowed from the library, they will count towards your total.
Everybody gets a certificate, and there may be other rewards from your library, too - just ask them when you join.
Yes, 28 different countries around the world are joining in with Team Read, thanks to the British Council. So look out for messages from children in far off places!
For older children, this year we have introduced an extension to the Summer Reading Challenge. Extreme Team Read has been designed as part of a new project to encourage transition year children (year 6, about to enter year 7) to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge.
Extreme Team Read is not available everywhere; if your library or school is taking part, you'll be given a special holographic card with the access key. With this code Extreme Team Readers can access exclusive areas on the website with activities aimed at an older audience.
